Gas mixers for small-scale consumers

19.05.2010

When the gas mixture you need is not available or is too expensive, the best solution is to make it yourself. This can be achieved safely and easily with compact gas mixers. There are two typical appliance categories, each of which is described below.

But first, it is not just small-scale consumers in trade and in industry who prefer to mix their own gases rather than buy premixed products. There are also benefits for users with gas consumption of 220 l/min and more, such as a considerable reduction in stored stocks, lower logistics expenses and reduced costs. Because in general, all that is needed is two types of bottled gases that are widely available at little cost. In fact, this is sometimes the only option as a centralized gas supply may be too expensive across a large site, the place where the gas is needed may vary, or the task in hand may call for a number of (alternating) gas mixtures.

For users with low requirements of up to approximately 110 l/min, the solution are mixers such as WITT’s BM-2M. This self-contained system is one of the smallest of its kind in the world: no additional components such as a pressure regulator are required, and it also comes ready-equipped with safety valves and a manometer. Weighing just 3.5 kg, the appliance is mounted between the two gas cylinders, where it does not take up any extra space and is protected from damage. It is fitted with standard connections, so all you need is a spanner. Two sturdy control knobs in the robust aluminium housing are used to set the mixing ratio and the volume of gas, and can even be operated precisely when wearing gloves. There is a maximum divergence of one per cent in its accuracy, thus guaranteeing a precise mixing quality. The appliance is suitable for mixing standard gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, argon and helium.

If the user’s gas consumption is up to 220 l/min, mid-range appliances are more suitable. A typical example is the MM-Flex, which is also manufactured by WITT. It is just as compact and easy to use as a compact mixer and can be wall-mounted, making it suitable for use in service vehicles and even in stationary environments. It is also suitable for use with all industrial gases with the exception of toxic and aggressive gases. An external pressure regulator is required for operation, however.

Incidentally, compact mixers do not only reduce costs and boost your flexibility: branded appliances such as those made by WITT also deliver consistent results thanks to their integrated balanced pressure regulators, which compensate for fluctuations in the pressure of the gas supply.
