The next revolution in fuel gas safety: 85-30 SMART

23.04.2026

With the 85-30 SMART, WITT introduces the world’s first smart flashback arrestor, marking the second revolution in fuel gas safety. This patented innovation combines WITT’s proven safety elements with integrated sensors and electronics. As a result, safety-related events such as flashbacks and backfires can now be detected and communicated in real time. Users gain new transparency into the status of their gas supply and can manage operation, maintenance, and safety with significantly greater precision than before.

Real-Time Monitoring for Maximum Process Control

The 85-30 SMART is based on WITT’s technologically advanced and proven mechanical design, which has provided reliable protection against the hazards of fuel gas use for decades. A new feature is its active monitoring function: the device not only stops flashbacks and backfires but also detects them and immediately transmits a signal.

This transforms the device from a passive safety component into an active sensor within the gas system. Continuous monitoring enables immediate response to irregularities and establishes a stable, safe process foundation. Personnel, equipment, and system components are more effectively protected, extending overall service life. Maintenance becomes more targeted through condition-based servicing, helping reduce unplanned downtime.

Proven Technology as a Foundation

Technically, the SMART version is based on the proven 85-30 flashback arrestor. The flame arrestor features a temperature-controlled backflow preventer, a gas non-return valve, and an integrated dirt filter. It is available in brass or stainless steel and is suitable for numerous gases such as acetylene, hydrogen, natural gas, and oxygen.

The 85-30 fully complies with the requirements for safety devices in accordance with DIN EN ISO 5175-1. The device's high reliability is confirmed by certification from the IBExU Institute, whose testing criteria exceeds legal requirements and represents one of the highest certification standards worldwide. Since 2025, IBExU has been conducting testing and certification in the autogenous technology sector on behalf of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM).

From Point-of-Use Model to Smart Safety

The launch of the 85-30 SMART marks a significant milestone in WITT’s corporate history and in the safe handling of fuel gases. In 1945, company founder Paul Witt revolutionized protection against flashbacks with the first dry point-of-use supply system—an innovation that has had a decisive influence on today’s DIN EN ISO 5175-1 standard. With the current patent for the 85-30 SMART, WITT is consistently advancing this development into the digital age and once again setting new standards.

Ideal for Interconnected Gas Supply Systems

Thanks to its signal transmission capabilities, the 85-30 SMART is ideally suited for modern, digitally networked production environments. The new WITT device supports the digitalization of gas supply systems while helping improve operational safety, system availability, and efficiency.
