Package Leak Detection with Differential Pressure: LEAK-MASTER® CONTURA
The differential pressure method enables non-destructive, precise and repeatable package leak testing. Leak detection is based on measuring the smallest pressure changes and requires no additional test gas. This makes the method suitable for a wide variety of packaging types and provides a reliable solution for quality assurance in the food, pharmaceutical and packaging industries.
How Does Differential Pressure Leak Detection Work?
The differential pressure method used by the LEAK-MASTER® CONTURA utilises physical pressure changes to accurately detect leaks. During testing, the package is analysed in a sealed test chamber between two membranes. By creating a vacuum, the membranes tightly conform to the package being tested, while the system analyses a possible pressure increase within a few seconds. Even the smallest pressure deviations are detected and evaluated by highly sensitive sensors.
Package Leak Detection with LEAK-MASTER® CONTURA – Maximum Accuracy
Compared to other package leak detection and seal integrity testing systems, the CONTURA offers several unique advantages:
- Applicable to even more packaging types: No additional test gas required, highly flexible membrane technology.
- Detection of all leak types: Not only sealing defects but all leak sources are identified.
- Detects even more leaks: Micro leaks < 10 µm as well as gross leaks.
- Reliable results: Highly sensitive sensors provide repeatable and objective test results.
- Quantitative evaluation: Determines the actual leak rate instead of simply distinguishing between “pass” and “fail”.
- Easy installation and maintenance: Integrated vacuum pump, no compressed air required.
Reliable Package Leak Testing without extra Test Gas
A key advantage of differential pressure technology is its high flexibility. Since no additional test gas is required, the method is suitable for a wide range of packaging types and products. At the same time, the package remains undamaged during testing and can be used afterwards.
The objective evaluation of the smallest pressure changes ensures consistent and traceable test results. Packaging defects can therefore be detected at an early stage, production processes monitored, and quality standards maintained over the long term.
LEAK-MASTER® CONTURA – Differential Pressure Technology from WITT
The LEAK-MASTER® CONTURA has been specifically developed for the non-destructive package leak detection of flexible packaging and MAP packaging. Thanks to its flexible membrane technology, the test chamber adapts to different package shapes and enables reliable leak detection regardless of the leak location.
The combination of high measurement accuracy, short test times, intuitive operation and digital documentation helps companies perform quality control efficiently and in compliance with industry requirements.
Leak Detection for a Wide Variety of Packaging Types
The LEAK-MASTER® CONTURA is suitable for numerous applications in the food, pharmaceutical and medical industries. The system is particularly proven for testing modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) but can also be used for products without protective gas.
Typical application areas include packaging for meat, fish, dairy products, cheese, bakery products, pasta, snacks, coffee, cereals, pet food as well as medical and pharmaceutical products.
The following packaging types can be tested:
- Flow packs
- Stand-up pouches
- Bags and pouches
- Thermoformed trays and tray packaging
- Skin packaging with residual gas volume
- Sachets and capsules
- PET bottles
- Resealable packaging
- Ampoules, vials and blister packs
- Wet wipe packaging
The differential pressure method detects both micro leaks and gross leaks and identifies all leak types – not only seal defects. This provides users with reliable and documentable results for dependable quality assurance.
Pac-Check and Calibration Kit for Validatable Test Results
Various accessories are available for regular verification and calibration. The Pac-Check can be used to verify the leak rate, while the Calibration Kit enables calibration of leak rate as well as internal and external volumes. An optional splash-proof barcode reader simplifies user and product selection.
Common Causes of Package Leaks
Leaks can occur at various points in a package. Seal seams of MAP and vacuum packaging are particularly susceptible. Typical causes include unsuitable sealing parameters, uneven temperature or pressure distribution, worn or contaminated tools, and product residues in the sealing area.
Material defects in the packaging film or faulty closures can also lead to leaks and negatively affect shelf life, product safety and the quality of an entire production batch. Regular package leak detection helps identify such defects at an early stage and reduce waste.
Leak Detection According to Recognised Standards
WITT is certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 22000
